These .999 pure AVDP ounce copper challenge coins were privately minted and are based on a design proposed by William Barber in 1877. Barber’s design was meant to grace the Half-Union $50 gold coin, the largerst denomination of gold coin ever struck by the US Mint that was intended for circulation. The original gold piece is one of the most famous U.S. mint patterns ever created. The only two examples struck in gold in 1877 today reside in the Smithsonian Museum.
